Alice married William James BILL, son of Thomas BILL and Ellen ARNOLD, on July 15, 1898 in Langdon, Cavalier, North Dakota, USA. William was born on August 2, 1878 in Glammis, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada and died on November 3, 1956 in Cavelier, Pembina Co, North Dakota, USA aged 78.

"Billy Bill" was born in Eastern Ontario to Thomas & Mary Ellen Bill. He came to North Dakota with his parents as a child. They settled on a farm on the Tongue River - 1/2 mile east of John Crosby's; but the parents left and went to Canada.
Alice's mother was a Webb. Her grandparents moved to Cavalier area & after Alice's mother died when she was born, she came & lived with Grandma Webb. They lived close to Crosby's and Alice & William Crosby played together as children.
Grandpa Bill's used to be the gathering place in the county. They had a ready made baseball team. Butchering day also was a big event The older children first went to the Crosby school, down to Birdie & Herb; and then to the Cranley school after moving to the "bush) in 1920. They left the river & moved to a quarter just outside Hamilton & lived in a big brick house. Later they moved into Hamilton.
Evelyn used to tell us how the first order of the day was to set a big batch of bread in a big dishpan - make 12 loaves. Once the bread soured and Grandpa would have had a fit if you wasted anything so they fed it to the pigs so he wouldn't see it. They always had extra people to feed. The kitchen floor had cracks in it and was so cold they couldn't eat in it in winter even with a blazing fire. Grandma used to scrub the wood floor on her hands & knees. The boys used to do mean things - they'd give a cat ex-lax and lock it in a dresser drawer where it would make a mess & the girls would have to wash up all the clothes again
Eleanor remembers Grandma making a special treat for Grandpa when she made a pork roast. She sliced off a big hunk of pork fat & he would eat it covered with cream & sugar & tell us it was like ice cream!
The following are memories'; of Lawrence Bill & Alvin Crosby as they would sit visiting:
Lawrence remembers he & "the little kids" used to chase Grandma's chickens. She had a Billy Goat that would chase them! Grandma's remedies included:
boils - take a bottle & heat it really hot, put it over the boil and when it cooled; it would suck the boil out.
coughing - a mixture of sugar & kerosene.
colds - Epsom salts
step on a rusty nail - make a poltice of bread & milk; also good for boils.
They were quarantined once for Scarlet Fever. The Dr. came out and brought a case of tomatoes & told them to make homemade tomato soup. Everyone came through fine, no after effects.
After Frank's wife Dehlia died, when Russell was a baby, Grandma took care of the boys. She had George, Gordon, Lester & Eddie, Lawrence & Russell, Evelyn & Margaret besides the older kids. Grandma had a hard life. She had to carry water from the river. She had a hard time keeping a wood supply. Harold was always good about chopping some up, but he worked out alot. Some years they'd make a big pile, and then Grandpa would get a chance & sell it all.
They told of Grandpa hitching up his mules or team every spring & having a run-a-way every year. He wore suspenders & they would come down when the team was running and his pants would drag & pull down over his boots as the team would drag him & he'd try to hang on.
He loved his teams and even when they moved in town in Hamilton (1937) he had his team & would haul the dray from the railroad depot. He also would drag the racetrack between horse races every year at the Hamilton Fair & they would always announce his name over the loud speaker.
Lawrence said he can never remember Grandma being angry or mad or scolding him. She had salt & pepper hair & wore it braided & wound up in.. a pug on the back of her head.
When they were first married they lived on the "hill" place 1 mile N. and 1/2 mile E. of Crosby's and worked for Mr. Bennett. The first time Alvin remembered being at Bills, was when the house on the "hill" burned down & they were living in someone's cook car. Alvin rode up to see them with his Dad & Mother in the buggy.
"Billy Bill" was a pretty good worker. He used to have 20 some mules & horses. He'd get a job plowing summerfallow for someone & send the kids off with about four plowing outfits.
It was pretty rough on that hill place. From there they moved to the "bush place" by the Tongue River (Louis Armstrong's now) where Lester was born. They moved across the river by the bridge when Ed was born. When they got to the bush there was big timber, so he put everyone busy cutting wood & he'd borrow somebody's tractor to saw the wood with. Harold used to make sawing machines out of old Fords - use a pulley to drive off the hind wheels or even take the engine off & hook it to the saw.
