17. Hugh McGILLIVRAY 16,17 (Donald7, Duncan2, John1) was born on November 20, 1843 in Isle of Mull, , Argyll, Scotland,5 died on May 20, 1927 in Austin, Mower Co, Minnesota, USA aged 83, and was buried in May 1927 in Bowbells Cemetery, Burke, North Dakota, USA.

Bought a farm from a family named Ruttle on the north edge of Inkster, ND. Georgie Orr lived with the family during the last years of his life. The rest of the children were born on this farm.
Donated 2 acres for a cemetary in Inkster. Later he gave another 2 acres. He homesteaded in Ward County, ND on December 10, 1899. He, Georgie Orr, Mary and Kate, both girls still being single, took homesteads. The homesteads were located as follows: Hugh McGillivray SE 1/4 of Section 12-162-88, Georgie Orr the SE 1/4 Section of 11-162-88, Mary who homesteaded later, in 1900, took the NW 1/4 of Section 12-162-88 and Kate in April took the NE 1/4 of Section 12-162-88. Joe and Sarah Cole took the SW 1/4 of Section 12-162-88.
The trip to the homestead in Burke County, ND with his father and uncles in 1899 must have made an impression on Hugh who was 11 at the time.
Years later he wrote about the trip. Hugh Sr. settled on the homestead on June 10, 1900. He built a soddie and came backt to Inkster about harvest time with Mary in a covered wagon. That had been a real dry year and there was not much crop. It started to rain in August when he was about halfway between Park River and Inkster coming home from Kenmare. He had filed for his homestead in Minot. He then stayed in Inkster until the next spring. Georgie Orr, and probably Joe and Sarah Cole, stayed on the homestead all winter. In the spring of 1901, they shipped an immigrant car with the machinery, horses, lumber, fence posts, etc.
After school was out in the summer of 1901, the family took the train to Grand Forks and stayed with Margaret for about two weeks. They then took the Great Northern to Minot and transferred to the Soo Line at Minot and took the Soo to Kenmare. The part of the family on this trip were Jean, the mother, Jennie, Flo, Don, Hugh, Ellen, Vera, and Beth. Alex went out with Kate earlier. They were met by Hugh Sr. with the wagon.
The notes go on to talk about the 16' by 24' two story house the family lived in that summer. Hugh remembers only two room upstairs and one downstairs. They cooked on a coal stove in the soddie Hugh Sr. had built in June 1900. From the notes again, "That year they had a very good crop and that summer they built a sod barn. The kids helped build the barn. The barn was 80' by 28' and had a board roof. Lumber for the house came from Kenmare."
Jane Irvine McGillivray died on September 30, 1923 at the farm near Norma, ND.
Hugh Sr. died May 20, 1927 in Austin MN of pernicious anemia. From his obituary: "Six of his surviving children were at his bedside when the end came. Other surviving relatives are his brother Hector of Paisley, Ontario, Canada, 60 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Mr. McGillivray was a leading figure in the pioneer days of the Red River Valley. Prominent in all things for the betterment of the country, he was one of the first settlers of Burke County. Active in church, school, and township affairs, he will not only be missed by his family but by the whole community. He was visiting his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Quast of Austin, MN when he suffered his last illness."
