Alexander Copeland (1807-1887) of Kintore, Scotland was a shoemaker. He married Jessie McIntosh (1814?-1847) about 1831. They never came to Canada, but six of their children did: Annie Milne, Isabella Mayor, Elizabeth Taylor, Alexander (Sandy), Jessie Flett, and Mary Dobie. This picture was brought to Canada by Elizabeth Taylor. Her granddaughter, Alison Watt Manson, gave me this story. Elizabeth came to New York and earned some money before she went to Bentinck to visit her sister, Annie Milne. She found Annie, with 5 young children, living in a house with a mud floor. Elizabeth bought shoes for the children because they didn't have any. She was so discouraged by her sister's situation that she refused to marry David Taylor until he had built her a "proper" brick house. Uncle Sandy was a magistrate, a member of' the town council, and presentor of the Free Kirk in Kintore, Scotland. In 1890, at 59, he came to Canada and bought a farm near Chesley. He had a goat, a great novelty, a cow and bees. When young Andrew Cameron swatted at them, he said "Dinna gie them battle or ye'll have them all to fecht !"
