By the death of Mr. Wm. Bowes (,June 17th, 1906) one of the most remarkable of the early settlers of Bruce has been taken away. Born in Scotland, he came to Canada when a young man, and at once attracted attention by his wide fund of information, acquaintance with the best literature, and intelligent interest in scientific and social problems. In the days of George Brown the letters of Mr. Bowes on the labor question, ethical topics, and on various subjects of interest, were frequently found in the Globe, and he contributed many an excellent article to the local press. He had a keen incisive style, with a fine command of words, but his subjects were too abstruse for the mass of readers to get hold of. He was liberal in his views on theological, political and literary topics. As a conversationalist he excelled, and delighted to cross swords with men like Alexander Shaw, Judge Kingsmill, Henry Cargill, James Innes, ex-M.P., and even George Brown himself. Of the death of Mr. Bowes we may say, `There goes the last of the Romans', the last of a band of men of whom 'Bowes, Brown and Bradley' were the well-known types. He lived in Greenock till a few years ago, when he came to spend his last days with his daughter, Mrs. Hanbidge, of Arran. The funeral took place at Pinkerton. The editor of The Times knew Mr. Bowes at first hand for twenty-four years, and has nothing but kindly recollections of his great ability, almost daring humor and intellectual honestyin dealing with the problems that attract thinking men.

Agnes Bowes was born on August 15th,1868, on a farm adjoining Pinkerton village, the daughter of William and Sarah Bradley Bowes. She attended Pinkerton Public School and Walkerton High School and after attending Toronto Normal School, she taught for a time in Elderslie Township. Leaving there she attended the Blish School of Elocution in Boston, Mass. Following graduation she taught elocution in Hamilton Ladies College and also at the Lutherville Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. During this period she gave recitals in many towns and cities in United States and Western Ontario. The Kincardine Reporter referred to her as a maunificent woman, her renditions fully equal to those of the great Mrs. Scott Siddons. The Hamilton Expositor spoke of her charm, naturalness and versatility.
In 1893 she went to Little Rock, Arkansas as a dramatic teacher in the Thorp Hall Academy.
On August 4th, 1896 she married Professor Hall, who shortly afterwards was appointed Superintendant of Public Schools in that city. The Halls spent their honeymoon in Canada.
Agnes Bowes Hall was president of the Y.W.C.A., a member of the Edelweiss Club, and the Aesthetic Club. For many years she trained all High School plays and was popular as an after-dinner speaker. During World War I she presented many entertainments at Camp Pike.
As a short story writer she was quite successful, and was also the author of a novel entitled "Craigie" which was published in 1914. The scene of it was laid in Pinkerton under the name of Gowan, and Cargill, the mill town as Craigie.
Mrs. Hall retained a strong loyalty for the land of her birth, and her love for the farm at Pinkerton is emphasized in "Craigie" when she as Christine Gowan declare "I love this place, the flats, the river, and I would rather have the meadows of Gowan than Central Park."
It is perhaps not too much to assume that the natural beauty with which she was surrounded in her formative years provided this talented and charming girl with some of the inspiration which led to her achievements in the realm of entertainment and literature.

Agnes married Prof. Robert C. HALL on August 4, 1896 in DeSable, Queens Co, Prince Edward Isalnd, Canada.4

Mary married Thomas PINKERTON, son of David PINKERTON and Mary Ann PARKHILL, on January 31, 1861 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.20 Thomas was born on March 4, 1838 in Lloydtown King Twp, York Co, Ontario, Canada,19,21 died on September 3, 1908 in Pinkerton, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada,1,4 aged 70, and was buried in Douglas Hill Cemetery Eden Grove, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

Thomas Pinkerton was the sixth son and spent his entire life in the village. He had many interests. In addition to managing both the sawmill and the carding mill for many years, he farmed and owned a house and general store in Eden Grove, a short distance east of Pinkerton. He was also the first secretary-treasurer of the local Fall Fair and provided the land for the creation of Greenwood Cemetery. He became the owner of the first log cabin and in 1873 arranged to give it to the destitute wife of Wm. McCormick, a local hotel-keeper who had left Pinkerton suddenly for the Caribou Gold rush in British Columbia. It was stipulated that Mrs. McCormick return the house when it was no longer needed. This occurred on the death of her stepdaughter Jennie in 1957 when the old house was returned to the Pinkerton family in Jennie's will.

Thomas married Mary Ann Bradley in 1861 and they had a family of 7 boys and 3 girls. None of the boys remained in Pinkerton. William and Thomas Jr. went to Toronto. John, Frank, George, Lorne, and Sydney are all believed to have gone to western Canada. One daughter, Gertrude, died young. The other girls, Frances and Lena, became nurses. Frances married and lived in the U.S.A. In 1917 Lena married James Douglas, well known in Hepworth, ON. Thomas Pinkerton died in 1908. A diary he kept that year has survived. It shows him living an active life. Among other things, he speaks of breaking up the old equipment in the carding mill for fire wood! There are entries until two days before he died, so it is evident that his death at 70 was sudden. His wife died in 1914.
