The following are some excerpts from a letter which Colin T. wrote in 1920 in answer to a request for experiences of early settlers in western Manitoba - "I left the County of Bruce, Ontario in 1882. Arrived in Winnipeg at the time of the big flood - with my wife and baby girl and had less than three dollars in my pocket. In a strange land, things looked pretty blue to me. We went to the emigrants shed and were glad to get in. I had to get work right away and got on with the Winnipeg Lumbering Co. and was with them for summers and parts of winter for five years. During this time, I used to get off for a few days in the summer to look for land, but did not succeed until 1885, when I took the train to Brandon and walked to Deloraine. After walking for four days, I located on NW1/4 10-5-22. It had been taken up in 1882 and cancelled in 1885. There had been about ten acres broken. Then I returned to Winnipeg to work again. In 1886, I had enough money to go on the land and I got ten acres in and 15 broken."
In 1886, he shipped lumber to Boissevain for a house 14 by 18, one storey, and had it hauled 25 miles to his homestead. He had a neighbor cut and stack the crop and then a prairie fire came along and burned the crop and half the lumber.
Mr. and Mrs. More moved out to the homestead in the spring of 1887. Money was still scarce, so he exchanged work with neighbors to get his crop put in - he couldn't afford a team of oxen. When they started to build their house, they found that someone had swiped a load of lumber. However, they got the house built and the wheat threshed and a few loads to market, so had a busy summer. He was able to purchase a pair of oxen for $75.00, but as money was scarce, he found extra work during the fall of 1887. He often walked as far as five miles morning and night and pitched sheaves all day for .75 cents.
In 1889, he purchased SW1/4 15-5-22 and later bought the NW1/4 on 15 from A. McDonald. This section was C.P.R. land. Mr. More's letter goes on - "By this time things were better. I bought a team of horses, as we were 18 miles from the nearest market. I also had to build sod stables and granaries as I went along and draw poles from Turtle Mountain as we were living on open prairie".... Mr. More then tells of purchasing more land and of building a larger house in 1905. He ends his letter by saying... "Now, you must not think that we have not had our ups and downs. I had two seasons in the1890's that did not pay expenses and the 1916 crop was struck with rust and had to be burned. I left home in 1879 with .15 cents in my pocket.... and I thank God for the health, strength and courage he has given me."
During these hard years, Colin More had time to help build a community school and church in the West Hall district. He was active in having the school built and served as trustee for many years. He was a member of the West Hall Forester's Lodge and for several years was Road Master - seeing that the proper road work was done. Both Mr. and Mrs. More were faithful members of the West Hall Church, which was held in the school. Mrs More was one of the original members of the West Hall W.M.S. Colin More passed away in 1925 and his wife, Elizabeth, then lived with her daughter, Irene (Renie)
