Obituary for Samuel WELSFORD (Clyde)
Alexandra Herald and Central Otago Gazette ,8 December 1909.
It is withdeep regret that we are obliged to cronicle the death one of the earliest pioneers of the Dunstan Diggings in the person of Samuel Dewstow of Clyde, which occured on Sunday last at the advanced age of 77 years. Born in Devonshire, England, Mr. Welsford arrived in Victoria when only 21 years of age, where he resided and carried on the butchering business for over seven years. News of the gold discoveries in New Zealand led to him taking part in the hunt, and he arrived at the Gabriel's Gully rush early in 1861 and again commenced business in his trade. He was destined, however, to follow up the rushes further into the interior and the Dunstan Rush claimed him as an investigator. He came tothe Dunstan in1862 and immediately set up business where he remained until death carried him away into the Land of the Great Unknown. The deceased gentleman was a man of high business attainments and was always to the front of any advocacy tending to adavance the town of Clyde and disrict.Universally respected by young and old the late Mr. Welsford's name will be handed down to future generations as a highly useful, popular, devoted and public spirited citizen. A charitable, warm-hearted man, he did a great deal of good in an unostentatious way, and a stauncher friend no man, woman or child could have wished to possess. A breaved wife and grown-up family of three sons and sixdaughters are left to mourn his irreparable loss and to them we extend a sympathetic hand. The funeral took place yesterday , when mourners from all parts of the district were present in large numbers.
