3. Elizabeth "Betty" SAUNDERS (Robert1) was born on September 30, 1833 in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada,3 died on February 10, 1924 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 90, and was buried in Purdy's Cemetery Greenock Twp. Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada. She was usually called Betty.

Betty married John KEYES, son of James KEYES and Hester GARLAND, in 1850 in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada. John was born on March 24, 1826 in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada, died on June 5, 1896 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 70, and was buried in Purdy's Cemetery Greenock Twp. Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

John Keyes was born Mar.24, 1826, in Beckwith Twp., Lanark Co. His father was James Keyes born April 22, 1786, at Carlow, Carlow Co., Ireland. His mother was the former Hester Garland born in Aug. 1799, Carlow Co., Ireland.

John's maternal grandfather was John Garland who came from Leighlinbridge, Carlow Co., Ireland; this being the same general area from which James Keyes came. The Keyes and Garland families moved from Ireland to Canada in 1818 & 1819. James Keyes was married to Hester Garland in 1822, in Beckwith Twp. Leighlinbridge is on the Barron River about 7 miles south of the city of Carlow.

John and Elizabeth lived and farmed on a 100-acre farm known as Lot 20, Con. 3W, Beckwith Twp., after they were married. They lived in a one-story log house. This farm was adjacent to John's parents who lived on Lot 21, Con. 3W. Elizabeth's parents lived on the farm across the road from the James Keyes farm. (From the 1851 census records)

To the best of our knowledge obtained from the Franktown Anglican Church records in Beckwith Twp. and from the deed records of Bruce Co., John and Elizabeth moved to Bruce Co. in 1855, which we believe is the same year in which the James Keyes and the Robert Saunders families moved to Greenock Twp., Bruce Co. John and Elizabeth Keyes purchased and settled on Lot 8, Con. 16, Greenock Twp. It is believed they purchased the farm in 1854 and paid $150 for the 100 acres. This farm has been owned and operated by descendants of John and Elizabeth Keyes up to the present time. John and Elizabeth built a one-story log house on the farm when they first settled there.
John's parents, James and Hester Keyes, moved close by, as they settled on Lot 5, Con. 17, Greenock Twp., when they moved from Beckwith Twp. Elizabeth's parents, Robert and Jane Saunders moved to Lot 6, Con. 16, from Beckwith Twp., and they also built a one-story log house. Note that these families lived quite close together as they had done in Beckwith Twp.

John's father, James Keyes, passed away Apr.16, 1868, and his mother, Hester (Garland) Keyes passed away Dec. 9, 1858. Both rest in the Anglican cemetery at Cargill, Bruce Co. John Keyes passed away June 5, 1896, and his wife, Elizabeth, passed away in 1924. Both rest in Purdy's cemetery, Greenock Twp., Bruce Co.

4. Mary Ann SAUNDERS (Robert1) was born on October 19, 1835 in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada, was christened in Franktown Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada, died in January 1887 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 51, and was buried in Purdy's Cemetery Greenock Twp. Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

Mary married William John KEYES, son of William KEYES and Anne COUMANS, about 1857. William was born in 1826 in , County Cork, Munster, Ireland, died on August 13, 1904 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 78, and was buried in Purdy's Cemetery Greenock Twp. Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

William John was born in 1826, in Ireland. We have been told he was born in Cork County, although a search of available records does not reveal anything. His parents were William Keyes and the former Anne Coumans. We have been told William John was a first cousin of John Keyes who was married to Mary Ann's sister, Elizabeth Saunders. To the best of our knowledge at this time (1975) William John's parents did not move out of Ireland.
William and Mary owned and operated their 100-acre farm known as Lot 16, Con. 13, Greenock Twp. They first built a log shanty to live in. According to the 1871 census records, their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1862 and was 8 years of age at the time the census was taken. We do not have any record of when she passed away.
William and Mary later built a 1 1/2 story log house with 3 rooms and a large pantry downstairs and 4 rooms upstairs, plus a large summer kitchen and woodshed. They later put boards and bats over the logs on the outside of the house and, when the house was torn down in 1917, it was found to be very well constructed. As the first barn, which they built, was not very large, it was enlarged twice, making it 90 feet long and 60 feet wide, which is considered a large barn. It is still standing in good repair in 1975. They also built a large implement shed with a shop and a lumber storage space in the upstairs. A milk house was built close to the house which was used to store milk, cream, canned fruit, apples, etc. They had a 2-acre orchard of apples, pears, plums and cherries. Grandfather Keyes liked to graft apple trees and there was one tree, which had 5 different kinds of apples on it.
When the timber was cleared off this farm, they left a large wood lot on the back end of the farm. This provided wood for cooking and heating. The wood lot consisted of many maple trees and these were tapped each spring for the making of maple syrup.
The school building of Greenock School Section No. 6 was relocated from a mile west to the southeast corner of this farm in 1903 and it was commonly known as Narva school.
Mary Ann became ill with a bad cold late in 1886 and she passed away in January 1887. William John passed away Aug. 13, 1904. Both rest in Purdy's cemetery, Con. 14, Greenock Twp.

5. James SAUNDERS (Robert1) was born in March 1839 in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada, died on February 1, 1883 in Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 43, and was buried in Paisley Cemetery, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

Written by Mary KEYES-YOUNG and Burton KEYES in 1973
James Saunders was born in March 1839, at Lot 21, Con. 3E, Beckwith Twp., close to the village of Franktown, Lanark Co., Ontario. His parents were Robert Saunders 1802-1872 and the former Jane Wynne 1812-1897. He was married to Mary Ann Rowe of Paisley, Ontario, in 1862.

Mary Ann was born July 9, 1844, near Durham, Grey Co., Ont. Her parents were Samuel Thomas Rowe and the former Mary Vollett. Mary Vollett came to Canada with her parents when they emigrated from Truro, Cornwall, England, about 1839 and settled on a farm near Durham. Having known Mary Vollett in England, Samuel T. Rowe followed the Vollett family to Durham and married Mary soon after finding her about 1842. Mary died after their first child, Mary Ann, was born and Mary Ann was cared for by her Vollett grandparents. Mary Ann was about ten years of age when her father took her from Durham to Paisley which was three years after he and his friend, Simon Orchard, had founded the Village of Paisley.

It appears there may have been an epidemic of some disease such as diphtheria which struck the James Saunders' home and caused the death of four of the youngest children within a short period. Whatever the cause may have been, this was a terrible tragedy to befall the family.

James moved from Beckwith Twp. to Greenock Twp., Bruce Co., Ont. in 1855 which was the same year in which his parents, brothers and sisters made the same move. Without a doubt, we believe he helped his parents to build a house and barn and carve out a farm from the bush. The 1861 census records show him to be staying at the home of his parents. The 1867 Bruce County Directory shows James owned a 100 acre farm known as Lot 15, Con. 13, Greenock Twp., which was across the sideroad from James' brother-in-law and sister, William and Mary Keyes.

James began his teaching career in the Village of Paisley in 1862. Mrs. Bessie (Laidlaw) Butchart has seen the teaching Certificate issued to James Saunders and it was personally signed by Egerton Ryerson. He started teaching in a log school. Due to overcrowding, a brick school was being erected in 1866 and was opened in 1867. Another teacher was hired and James became principal. See the "History of Bruce County", by Norman Robertson, pages 388 and 389.

James became the first Reeve of Paisley when it was incorporated in 1874. He was re-elected in 1875-6-7-8-9, 1880 and 1882. He passed away in 1883. Paisley post-office was first opened in 1856 with Thomas Orchard as postmaster. James Saunders became postmaster a few years later. After James' death, his wife, Mary Ann, took over as postmistress and it remained in her name until her death in 1917. Each member of their family worked in the post-office as soon as they could help and up to the time of their marriage. Mary Ann's son-in-law, James Laidlaw, passed up other business opportunities and helped by becoming Ass't. Postmaster during her later years.
James Saunders passed away in 1883. His wife, Mary Ann, passed away in July 1917. Both rest in a Paisley cemetery.

Provided by Bessie LAIDLAW-BUCHART in January 1971
James Saunders, my grandfather 9 was born on a Beckwith Twp., Lanark Co., farm and later moved with his parents, brothers and sisters to their new home in Greenock Twp., Bruce Co. He took Model School training and, as a child, I used to look at his certificate signed, in person, by Egerton Ryerson who founded the first educational system in Upper Canada (Ontario).

James became the first trained teacher in Paisley, taught in the old log school which once stood on the lot north of what was the J. C. Gibson home. Later this building was used as a hay storage shed on the old Elijah Welsford farm. James also became, in time, Paisley's first reeve and postmaster. He continued as postmaster until his early death, leaving his young wife with five young daughters. The girls, in turn, helped Grandmother with the post-office work. Julia's husband (my father) carried on the post-office as assistant to Grandmother until she died. The office was in the Saunders name until 1917. Father, as well, was a partner for 10 years in the Ballachey Laidlaw General Store business, in Paisley.

Mary Anne Rowe's father, Samuel Thomas Rowe, born March 9, 1819, in Truro, Cornwall, England, was apprenticed to a jeweler in nearby St. Austell, Cornwall, when a young man. He fell in love with Mary Vollett 17, of St. Austell, whose parents were planning to move to Canada, taking Mary and probably other members of their family with them. After arriving in Canada, Mary's parents settled near Durham, Ont., about 1838 - 1840.

Samuel Thomas determined not to lose his sweetheart, and accompanied by a friend, Simon Orchard, followed the Volletts in the very next sailing ship, landing in New York in 1839. He arrived in York (Toronto) in 1841 and we think he reached Durham, Ont., in 1843.

Here he married Mary Vollett. When their first babe arrived, Mary Vollett died; but the babe, Mary Ann Rowe, survived. The babe's Vollett grandparents raised her to nine years of age. Then her father, Samuel Thomas Rowe, took Mary Ann to Paisley with him (by ox-team and trail) to live with him and his second wife, a Miss Orchard who was a sister of his long time friend, Simon Orchard, another Cornwall, England, man. Mary Ann was born July 9, 1844.

Previous to the time when Samuel Thomas took his young daughter, Mary Ann, to Paisley, Simon Orchard and my Great-grandfather Rowe were the first white men to follow the Saugeen River to its confluence with the Teeswater River and there they founded the Village of Paisley. Mr. Orchard's land was to the north of the Saugeen. Great-grandfather Rowe later built the first brick house in Paisley. He gave the land on which the Anglican Church was built. His red brick house still stands (altered as to the porch) just beside the church grounds.

The following was provided by Naomi C. MAXWELL - 1973

Samuel Saunders was born June 30, 1842, near Franktown, Beckwith Twp., Lanark Co., Ont. His parents were Robert Saunders 1802-1872 and the former Jane Wynne 1812-1897. He moved with his parents, brothers and sisters, from Beckwith Twp. to Greenock Twp., Bruce Co., in 1855.. He was married to Elizabeth Bradley on February 18, 1869.

Elizabeth was born June 19, 1848, at Rockwood, Eramosa Twp., Wellington Co., Ont. Her father was John Bradley who was born in Kilkenny Co., Ireland. Her mother was the former Elizabeth Willoughby who was born in the Townland of Mayo, Queen's Co., Ireland. Elizabeth's parents emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1843.

Property deeds indicate That Samuel and his wife, Elizabeth, purchased the farm known as Lot 6, Con. 16, Greenock Twp., from Samuel's parents, Robert and Jane Saunders, in 1869. The 1871 census indicate that Samuel & Elizabeth, Robert & Jane, as well as Samuel's youngest sister, Margaret, were living in the same house or in houses adjacent to one another. Samuel and Elizabeth sold this farm in 1886 to Samuel's brother, Edward. It is not known whether they moved to Walkerton, Ont., at this time; but they did live in Walkerton for many years. Samuel's father, Robert, passed away in 1872 and it is not known where Samuel's mother spent her remaining years. She lived until 1897.

In 1913, Miss Mary Stinson R.N., was responsible for gathering together a group of old settlers and real patriarchs of Bruce Co. for a reunion and to have their pictures taken. Samuel Saunders was one of this group and the picture is shown on page 351 of the History of Bruce County, Vol. II, 1907-1968, by N. McLeod.

Samuel Saunders passed away Dec. 26, 1919, at Walkerton. His wife, Elizabeth, passed away Dec. 10, 1931, at Walkerton, Ont. Both rest in Purdy's cemetery, Greenock Twp., Bruce Co., Ont.

The amount of business secured did not warrant the bank in continuing the agency, which was closed in 1877. - - - Following the closing of the chartered bank, Robert Porteous opened a private bank. For some years Edward Saunders was in partnership with him in the business, which was continued until Mr. Porteous' death in 1896". Edward was the first Secretary - Treasurer of the Village of Paisley when it was first incorporated in 1874 and Edward's brother, James, became the first Reeve of Paisley the same year.
The first newspaper published in Paisley is said to be the "Paisley Advocate". Edward Saunders became publisher of the paper for a short time about 1877 and then passed it over to M. A. Clark. The "Paisley Advocate" continues to be published in 1973.
Edward and Agnes moved to Toronto about 1895 or 1896, where Edward started to work for a Trust Company in that city. He became General Manager of the Trust Company. They may have moved to Toronto after Mr. Porteous' death in 1896.
