1. Nicolae "John" BAIA, son of Georges BAIA, was born in 1895 in Palos, Brasov County, , Romania1 and died on February 26, 19821 aged 87. He was usually called John.

When John BAIA "Gpa" was 16 years old, he left Romania to come to West Virginia and worked in the mill and mines. He then returned to Romania and married Maria ULITA "Gma". They travelled to Belgium where Gpa worked in restaurants to earn money for their passage to Canada.

Gma was pregnant with Mary Windsora during the boat trip to Canada where they entered via Montreal in 1924. They then went on to Windsor where Mary was born. They returned to Montreal where Gpa worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Co., and Gma gave birth to Jenny and George. They finally ended up back in Windsor where John and Al were born, and where they would spend the rest of their lives together. Gpa worked at various jobs around Windsor, including a stint at the Ford Engine Plant No.2, in the same building his granddaughter worked in 1999. He also worked as a bartender at the International Tavern on Drouillard Road where his young sons would deliver him lunch every day and then be invited to sit at the bar and try out some of the many beers and ales that Gpa served his customers. My, how times have changed! Gma worked at White Laundry and had her claim to fame doing the laundry for the famous guests at the Elmwood, including Sammy Davis Jr. who asked for her personally to press is shirts when he was in town.

After Gpa retired he kept himself busy at home tending the garden and supplying the family with handsome wooden coasters, stools and shoesine boxes. Gma continued cooking and baking such delicacies as strudel, donuts, and hand cut noodles, which her family enjoyed every chance they got.

Written for the 1999 BAIA Family Reunion.
