Life Story for Klaas "Clarence" de Vries
Our Dad was born on October 13th, 1939 in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, the seventh child of Age and Janetje de Vries. His family immigrated to Canada when he was 14 years old. After moving around for the next few years, Dad's family eventually settled in Glen Miller. In 1961 Dad met the love of his life, Ann Triemstra. On June 4th, 1965, they were married and immediately moved into their newly built home in Carrying Place where they would stay until the end. In 1973, their first child, Christopher, was born. In 1977, Jonathan arrived, and then finally in 1981 they had a little girl, Andrea. Mom stayed home raising the children while Dad worked in a garage until 1977, when he became a painting contractor. Dad became well known all over the Trenton area for being a hard-working, meticulous painter and someone that people loved to work with.
In 1988, Dad was diagnosed with grade 2 (slow growing) astrocytoma brain tumours in the right frontal lobe. Doctors projected 2-3 years before they would progress to more aggressive tumours. At this time, at age 43, Mom went back to school for Nursing at Loyalist College, in preparation for the possibility that she was to be the sole provider for the family. It wasn't until 9 years later, in 1997, that Dad's tumours finally progressed to grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme, a fast-growing cancer with a very low survival rate. Much to his disappointment, Dad was unable to continue working and had to retire. That winter, Dad began intensive radiation treatment on both sides of his brain at Princess Margaret Hospital. In the spring, the radiation proved unsuccessful and the tumours had begun to grow again. An experimental surgery was then attempted, which only a very small percentage of people (1 in 400,000) have all of the precise conditions to receive. Even with this surgery, Dad was given 9-12 months to live. Thankfully, God gave us more time.
Around 2003, Dad began to experience weakness in his legs. It was discovered that the radiation he received was so intense that scar tissue had developed, blocking oxygen from getting to the brain. This caused the slow degeneration of movement, motor skills, and cognitive function.
In 1988 when he was first diagnosed, Dad was given just a couple years to live. He survived for 27 years. Through these years, Mom remained strong. Over the final 8 years or so, she diligently and patiently looked after Dad every day, making sacrifices that few could imagine. But through all of these trials, their faith in God never wavered. They showed all of us the meaning of the word love. On June 4th, 2015, they would have been married for 50 years.
Dad loved his wife and children so much, and never shied away from telling us. Dad was blessed with 4 grandchildren and even when he was feeling his worst, a picture of them would always put a smile on his face. Dad will be missed more than words can say, but we will forever carry with us the strength, warmth, laughter, and love he provided.
