1. William "George" BRIGGS was born on May 21, 1820 in , , , England1 and died from 1891 to 1901 aged 71.

George Briggs grew up in a French speaking area of Lower Canada. He learned harness making and practiced his trade in several Quebec locations prior to taking a 50 acre homestead in Brant Township (Twp), Bruce County, Ontario in 1851. He received his location ticket on June 7, 1851 and was given one month to occupy the land. To obtain clear title to the land he was required to clear and plant 12 acres of land and build a house 18 feet by 20 feet within a four year time period from the date of the location ticket. His father-in-law, Richard Guin received his location ticket at the same time that George did and they settled on adjacent lots.

When the census was taken in Februrary of 1852, George had a 14 x 18 foot log house, but none of the land was cultivated. By 13 January 1854, he had completed all requirements and received clear ownership of the land. Sometime that year, he remarried (Margaret died in 1853) and sold his land to move to Elderslie Twp, Bruce County, Ontario where he purchased a 100 acre farm. He was joined by his younger brother John who bought a nearby 200 acre farm. John lived in the same house with George's family and the two men worked on both farms with the help of Mary Ann and the older children.

George started a harness shop in Paisley, Elderslie Twp, Ontario and is listed in the 1867 Directory as such. In 1870, he sold his business and soon moved to Plymouth County, Iowa where he once again started a homestead. George did not stay in Iowa, however. He probably fulfilled the homestead requirements, sold the property and returned to Ontario with a nest egg to start his next business.

Geroge returned to Ontario and settled in Bentnick Twp, Grey County, Ontario where he once again practiced the business of a saddler, this time as G. Briggs & Co. Harness Dealers with David Smith. The firm was listed in the area directory for 1880. George was a ratepayer in Hanover in 1881 and was included in the 1881, census. In the 1891census, George is shown as being retired. Sometime between 1891 and 1901 he died.
