From "An Historic Albun of Paisley" 1974 - submitted by Gladys McMorran
Alexander McMorran and his wife, with their family of two small left Magherascouse, County Down, Northern Ireland in 1848 to emigrate to Canada. They landed at Toronto, then known as "Muddy York", and continued on north to Richmond Hill, where they operated a hotel. There, in 1854, they buried their oldest daughter, Mary, just five years old. Now, with four sons left the mother declared that a hotel was no place to raise a family. John Megraw, a cousin, had already settled in Bruce County and Alexander McMorran set out from Richmond Hill, on foot, into the "Queen's Bush" in search of a new home for his family. He took up land just west of Paisley, built a shanty, and returned for his wife and sons.
With all their belongings they reached Walkerton. From there to Paisley their means of transportation was a scow. It must have been a perilous journey down the Saugeen River from Walkerton to Paisley! Several of the articles that they brought with them are still in the possession of the family - a captain's chair from the hotel in Richmond Hill, a Seth Thomas clock, which operates with weights which must he wound each day, and various other articles.
Truth is stranger than fiction. The history of the pioneer needs no embellishments. When two years of age, I arrived with my parents in Rogue's Hollow, the present county town of Bruce, on our way into the "Queen's Bush." Here a boat was built, not of the present type, but of sufficient tonnage to accommodate all the family and utensils, down the Saugeen to the confluence of the Mud and the Willow Creek - a spot immortalized by Jno. A. Murdoch, in Carriers Boy's address, which reads in this way:
No church within the dark green shades
Nor traffic in the dim arcades;
But Rowe's Hotel, like Indian fort
Was Church and School and Store and Court
While strangers passed from wood to wood,
And wished to know where Paisley stood.
Near the banks of the river my first homesteading began. It was a beautiful place to the young mind free from care. The log shanty beneath the greenwood trees, the mysterious working of the new sawmill, the twinkling light from the neighbouring sugar camp, where youth and pleasure often met around the midnight fire to sip the syrup or imitate the owl; these were pleasures good enough for me.
But there is always the dark side of the picture, too. A shortage of bread, bad roads and no bridges were common difficulties. Cash might be plentiful but there was nothing to buy. During these days one ingenious fellow is said to have developed a plan to get a share of the current coinage. In the middle of the road he made a mud-hole, a trap for the emigrant's cart. A fee was imposed to pull it out
During his lifetime the pioneer recalled many anecdotes about the early days. One tale he loved to tell concerned a trip, made on foot, to Walkerton by his father. On this trip he was driving home a cow and a pig. Due to the fact that the animals did not travel well together, it was a tedious and aggravating journey. The cow would be persuaded to travel along the road, and the pig would wander. Then, he would manage to get the pig in line, only to discover the cow had strayed. Added to his problems, he also had a tiny kitten in his pocket. Among the supplies he brought home with him was an apple - the first one they had ever seen. It was divided into enough pieces that each had a taste of the treat.
The pioneer generation has all passed on, but many descendants are scattered throughout Canada. We can be proud of our pioneer ancestors. Let us remember them, and pass on to future generations a feeling of pride in their heritage.

JOHN MEGRAW FAMILY - from the Greenock History 1856-1981
John Megraw was born in 1819 at Ballygowan, Ireland. In 1846, he married Isabella Wallace of Newtownards, County Down.
In 1849 John and Isabella came to Canada with two small children, and lived for two years at Richmond Hill. In October of 1851, John set out to locate a homestead in the newly-opened tract known as the Queen's Bush. He walked from Richmond Hill to Owen Sound through the bush to Southampton, up the Saugeen and finally back to Richmond Hill by the Garafraxa Road. After some misfortune and distress, Mr. Megraw finally moved his family to this area.
In 1854 they went to the farm in the "Gore of Greenock" at Lot 1, Con. 22. The original log house was replaced in the late 1880's by the brick house which is still in use.
At the turn of the century there was a flourishing orchard on the farm including many varieties of early and late apples. The choicest apples were packed in barrels and shipped by railroad to the overseas market. The less choice ones were dried or hauled by team and wagon to Chepstow to be made into apple butter. But the orchard was wiped out by the severe frost of 1933.
To John and Isabella were born twelve children: Robert John and Grace, born in Ireland; Hugh, who was killed at the age of twelve by a rolling log while he was helping during the building of the first barn on the Samuel Gordon place on the Base Line; Elizabeth (Mrs. James McVeety); James Alexander, who died of pneumonia in 1883; Ainsley, editor of the Paisley Advocate from 1885 to 1892, during which time he published the 25th anniversary edition of the Advocate, which remains the most accurate and comprehensive history of the village of Paisley, and was quoted at some length in Norman Robertson's History of Bruce County; Martha (Mrs. Andrew Sinclair); Agnes Jane, who died at the age of eleven; Hugh, born the year the first Hugh was killed and named after him, but this Hugh lived to serve in World War I, and died in France in 1916; Wallace, who farmed on the property taken up by his father until a short time before his death in 1952; Isabella, who died in infancy; and Sara (Mrs. S.E. Hamilton).
Of the male members of the family, only Ainsley and Wallace married. Ainsley married Annie Nelson, but she died in 1886 along with their infant daughter. He later married Ada Killins, but she too died in childbirth. Wallace married Christie Brown of Bruce Township. Their family of six were all daughters: Annie May, who died at the age of fourteen; Gertrude (Mrs. Roy Gedney) who died in 1974; Irene (Mrs. Neilson Stark) who died in 1973; Winnifred; Edna (Mrs. Frank Brandon), now living in Elmira; and Ola (Mrs. Gordon Fraser) now living in Collingwood.
So the Megraw name has died out in the township, the only surviving "Megraw" in the direct line being Miss Winnifred, who makes her home in Toronto. But the family farm at Lot 1, Con. 22 has been owned by direct descendants for 145 years, by John Megraw, by Wallace Megraw, his son, and by Harold Stark, his great grandson.
