1. Capt. David VALENTINE, son of John VALENTINE and Jeannie BEATTIE, was christened on March 5, 1760 in Montrose, , Angus, Scotland 1 and died on May 2, 1820 in Montrose, , Angus, Scotland 1 at age 60.

David Valentine entered the Navy in 1779 as an Able seaman and served on several ships then was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1793. His first ship as a Lieutenant was the Seagull, then he was transferred to the Thames under Capt. Cotes. In October of that year, they were involved in a battle with the French frigate Uranie, he was wounded and taken prisoner and spent two years in a French prison. He was freed in 1795 and promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1804. He married Agnes Ann Valentine youngest daughter of David Valentine and Mary Smith in 1809 at St. Pancras Old Church, London. Witness to the marriage was John Henderson Valentine, brother of Agnes Ann who was a banker in London. I don't have the date when he was promoted to Captain but it was before 1819 when he signed himself "Captain David Valentine", he was at that time in Montrose and apparently not well. He died May 2, 1820.

The first store to open in Walkerton was started by John Valentine in the early 1850's and was located opposite to Joseph Walker's log tavern at the corner of Durham and McNab streets. This general merchandise store carried anything and everything to supply settlers' needs, from flour to bear traps.

Today Stark's Mill stands on the western outskirts of Paisley. It is the oldest industry in this area. For a century Stark's Mill has faithfully served its customers of Paisley and the district. It has been operated by members of the Stark family for the hundred years.
John Valentine a native of Montrose Scotland was born in 1817. He came to Walkerton in 1851 and opened a store in partnership with George Jardine. Securing a mill privilege on the Teeswater River at Paisley, he built a sawmill in 1852 and a grist mill in 1855. When Mr. Valentine was going down the Saugeen River, he happened to meet Mr. John Megraw. He persuaded him to leave his farm and come to the building of the dam and sawmill. Mr. Megraw did this and moved his family into a log shanty where the railroad station stood.
The first dam was built about six hundred feet upstream from the present dam. Parts of the dam were constructed of pine and cedar logs held together by rock elm pins which were driven in holes bored in the logs. This construction was then covered with earth. The dam was necessary to provide power for the sawmill, which was built to saw the lumber for the flour mill, built in 1854 on the site of the present mill. The logs that were used in the framework of the first flour mill and the present mill were hand hewn into square timbers with broad axes, by early pioneers. They were cut from the virgin timbers within a half mile of the site.
The sawmill operated until 1929. Some of the logs were floated down the Teeswater River from as far away as the Greenock swamp or hauled to the mill on sleighs to be cut into lumber.
The early settlers who in most cases had no way of transporting their wheat to the mill, for grinding into flour, carried it long distances in sacks on their backs. These people seldom left crusts uneaten.
Mr. Valentine provided a market for logs and wheat to the early pioneers until 1872 when the business was bought by Mr. James Stark who had formerly owned and operated a flour mill at Dunblane. In 1884 the flour mill burnt down but was replaced the next year by the present mill.
The early mill stones were replaced by a new roller system. The wheat was steamed then crushed by rollers. From there it entered the cups of an elevator belt which carried it to the top of the mill where the separation process began. The crushed grain was fed through five different machines which used silk cloths to separate the bran shorts and low grade flour from the desired finished product.
The by-products, that is, bran, shorts, and low grade flour were 501d to the local farmers for feed. The flour was sold locally and exported to England, Scot Gibraltar and the middle east, under the trade names of Excelsior, Prairie Rose, and Pure Cream.

The child from this marriage was:

57 F    i. Mary Polly BROCKIE was born on May 25, 1873 in Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

Polly BROCKIE-HALLIDAY best wrote an introduction to this family to the Elora Express in 1934:

I was born on May 25th, 1873, in the village of Paisley, Bruce County. I was brought to the home of my grandparents, John and Catherine BARRON-BROCKIE, at Bob Accord, very soon after this, as my mother died at the time of my birth.
My grandparents came to Nichol Township, I would say, sometime around 1835. There were ten children in the family. The three oldest, William, Thomas and Margaret, were born in Scotland; the others, John, James, George, Alex, Kate, David and Archie, in the log house in Nichol Township. Here they grew up and endured the hard tasks of farm life. I can still hear my father telling about their "noon siestas" and my grandfather saying, "Boys, while you are resting yourselves, go and pitch off that load of hay." I am sure they endured all the hardships known to pioneer life, but I never remember hearing complaints. They were a stalwart and sturdy people. They were tall of stature, several of them being of six feet, and with the exception of Uncle Davie, of good health. Thomas died in 1848, aged 17 years, and as the others grew up they started out to make homes for themselves.
William, John and George went to Bruce County and settled on farms not far from Paisley, about eighty miles from the old home. This meant separation, of course, but I know from hearsay that they made periodic visits back to the old home, coming by ox-team which required several days on the road. Soon after this the railroad must have gone through, for as a very small child 1 remember the thrill of going on the train to visit our relatives in Bruce County.
Margaret about this time married Peter McBAIN near the town of Fergus. They later moved to Garafraxa and lived there rest of their days. Later my father, Archie, the youngest, also went to Paisley and married my mother, Mary Jane VALENTINE, daughter of John VALENTINE. He operated a small grocery store there for many years. James and David had their farms near Cumnock (Greenock ?), but I do not think that Uncle James cared for farming, as he sold his place and moved to Paisley. Uncle Alex lived all his life on the old home place. My Aunt Kate, who was the good and only mother I ever knew, kept house for him until he married. After this my Aunt Kate and I went to live with Uncle Davie near Cumnock (Greenock ?). There 1 attended my first school. Between Uncle Davie’s farm and the school was a stretch of what I call the "bush," a piece of woods with a corduroy road running through it. This bush held all kinds of terrors for me, and in the mornings with my dinner pail and books clasped tightly under my arm I would run until I was out of breath to get through this patch of road.
For amusement the neighbors would gather together at the homes. The older folks would play whist or euchre, and some of the musically inclined would fiddle or play, and there would be square dances, Scottish reels, etc. Always the singing of old Scottish songs was part of the evening’s program. The Brockie family were all musical and the men had fine bass voices, each of them having attended singing school could read music readily. When they were ready to leave they would gather in a circle and taking each other's hands would sing Auld Lang Syne, bundle themselves into the sleighs filled with straw, cover up with the buffalo robes and to the tune of sleigh bells would disappear into the night.
Sunday, they always attended the Presbyterian Church.
This is the story of the Brockies of that generation, as I remember it, and they now are all passed to the great beyond.

Mary married James HALLIDAY on July 11, 1896 in Devils Lake, Ramsey Co, North Dakota, USA.
