Excerpt from “ELORA” by John Connon.

Many sons of the first settlers in the vicinity of Elora became in their turn the pioneers in those townships northward towards Lake Huron. That, without knowing it, they also followed the old trail which was used by the Indians, when they travelled between Bon Accord and Lake Huron, is well illustrated by the following extract from a Paisley newspaper.
In referring to the death of William Brockie, of the Gore of Greenock, it says:-"He was 79 years and 7 months of age, and was born in the Parish of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His father immigrated with the family to Canada in the year 1337 and settled in the Township of Nichol, in what is known as the Bon Accord settlement. After helping his father to clear his farm, and seeing a comfortable home established, with good buildings and well stocked with fine cattle, he bethought himself of a home of his own. On the 7th of September, 1854, he, along with two brothers, George and John, his cousin, Louis Lamb, James Mair, George Leask, David Black, James Davie and one or two others who wished to see the country, bade good bye to the old folks at home. "We set out," says one of the two survivors of this little party of pioneers, "for the Valley of the Saugeen, at that time the great northwest of Ontario, whence all looking for land were travelling. Some believed it was the last of the land in Canada upon which white men could five. After an eventful journey of about six days and navigating the Saugeen river on a raft, which took all the attention of the man at the helm, we at last arrived safe at Orchardvale, now Paisley. All the company settled in the Gore of Greenock and went to work full of hope on being lairds of the land they had taken possession of."
