Christmas, 1848, saw the Wilson family gathered in their log shanty in West Gwillembury Township, Simcoe County. John was there with his wife Frances (born Frances Kneeshaw) whom he had married 20 March 1830, in Crambe, Yorkshire County, England, before emigrating to Canada. His children, all Canadian born, were also there: Alice, aged 14, Roger 13, John 10, Elizabeth 7, Mary Ann 4, Robert 2, and baby Sarah who was just two months old. In addition, there were a couple of friends who attended him for a very special reason this Christmas Day. John Wilson was dying and it was necessary that he make his will.

This is a copy of his will, probated in 1854 in the Prerogative Court of the County of Simcoe. Comparing John's signature and the writing, the will appears to have been dictated, likely to John Thorpe, a witness.

In the name of God, Amen.

I, John Wilson, of the Township of Westgwillembury, being ill in body but sound in mind and memory, do make this as my last and only will and testament ____ in which I divide my property in the following manner ___.

In the first place, I give unto my Son Roger one hundred acres of Land being the North half of lot No.13 in the fourteenth Con, Westgwillimbury, in consideration of his paying out of Said lot one hundred Dollars for his Sister Allice and his Sister Elisabeth to be paid in to annual payments after he is of age, and that he is to remain as heretofore with the family untill he is of age.

Secondly that I give unto my Son John fifty acres of lot No. Eleven South quarter out of which he is to pay his Sister Mary Anne fifty dollars in one year after he is of age ____ and that he is to remain on the farm and assist the family untill he is of age.

I give unto my Son Robert fifty Acres of lot No. Eleven being the North quarter of South half ____ out of which he is to pay unto his sister Sarah fifty dollars in one year after he is of age and that he is to remain with and assist the family untill he is of age and further that my wife Francis is to have her support out of the entire property During her Widowhood and further that when Roger is of age he is to have one third of the st9ck that will then be on the farm and further that when John is of age, he is to have one half of the stock that will be on the farm and further that when Robert is of age he is to have the stock remaining on the farm and further that the Executors will see that children be educated in a reasonable way.
I do further appoint and authorise Robert Sawyer and Robert Nishaw (sic) as my lawful Executors as may relate to the execution of this will and testament.

John Wilson died a month later, 22 January 1849.

John (and his wife Eliza) living on 50 acres, con 13, lot 11, value $2000,
Alice (and her husband, John Garbett) living with Mary Ann on con 12, lot 11,
Elizabeth (and her husband, Amos Doan) living in a log shanty on Amos' father's farm, con 10, lot 12.

The witnesses were living on con 12, lot 14 (John Thorpe) and con 14, lot 17 (Robert Sawyer).
Of the other executor, Robert Nishaw, nothing could be found but it is noted that a Robert Kneeshaw lived on 200 acres, con 13, lot 13, the farm immediately south of Roger.

John married Frances KNEESHAW, daughter of William KNEESHAW and Alice HORSLEY, on February 20, 1830 in Crambe, Bulmer, Yorkshire, England.¹ Frances was born in February 1809 in Crambe, Bulmer, Yorkshire, England and died on October 15, 1894 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada at age 85.

The John & Alice Garbutt Family lived in York County, Ontario at "The Hollows" between Aurora and New Market. Their sons Wilson and Walter, along with a Proctor boy, went to Michigan to work. When Francis Roger was nine years old (1879) the rest of the family relocated to Michigan by "Homestead Car". Roger is said to have rode one of the cattle part way in from the railway station.

A resident of Paisley since 1919 and a native and lifetime resident of the district, Mrs. James Wilson died on Thursday at the Lippert Nursing Home in Pinkerton. She was in her 93rd year. Mrs. Wilson was one of the village's oldest residents but until about a year and a half ago had to had continued to reside in her home here, still able to do her own housework. At that time, she sustained a broken hip in a fall. After some time in Stratford and Walkerton Hospitals, she went to make her home in Pinkerton, joining her husband there.
Born on the 6th Con. of Culross Twp., she was married in 1888 to James Wilson. They farmed on the 16th Con. of Greenock, where they remained until they retired to Paisley in 1919. Here they made their home on Victoria St. and won the esteem and respect of a large circle of friends. In September 1956, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson quietly marked their 68th wedding anniversary. Mr. Wilson died in May, 1957.
Surviving are one daughter, (Mary) Mrs. Arthur Pettit, of St. Thomas, and two sons, Edgar Wilson of Eden Grove, and Wellington Wilson of Stratford. A daughter, (Ida) Mrs. John Wrightson, predeceased her. The funeral will be held Friday, with service at the Stoddart Funeral Home at 2:00 pm and burial in Purdy's Cemetery.

The marriage of Mr. Jonathan Metcalfe of the 14th con, Greenock, and Miss Louisa Roumey was quietly solemnized at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. Joseph Roumey, of the 12th con, Greenock, on Wednesday, Dec. 28th, at 8 pm, in the presence of the near relatives of the contracting parties. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. McKinnon, M.A., B.D., of Pinkerton. The bride looked very pretty in a dress of cream cashmere, and was unattended. Her little sister Ida, dressed in pink, acted as flower girl. After the ceremony was over, the happy young couple received the congratulations of their friends, and all proceeded to the dining room to partake of a sumptuous repast. The death occurred in hospital at London on Thursday last of Mrs. Wilson Metcalf, a native Greenock Twp. She had been in failing health for a number of years.
Mrs. Metcalf, the former Catherine May Cruickshank, was born Nov. 17, 1888, on the 14th of Greenock, a daughter of the late John Cruickshank and Elizabeth Flett. She attended SS #7 Bradley school.
In 1908 she was married to Wilson Metcalf and they farmed in Greenock Twp. Mr. Metcalf died in 1929. Mrs. Metcalf was member of the Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are one son, Willard, of Greenock Twp., and two daughters, (Pearl) Mrs. Clifford Chapin of Brantford, and (Jennie) Mrs. George Gregg of Greenock; also two sisters, (Jean) Mrs. Clarence Fraser and (Hazel) Mrs. E.D. Elwes, both of Paisley. There are 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter, (Reta) Mrs. Clifford Tanner and three brothers.
Private family funeral service took place at the Stoddart Funeral Home, Paisley, Saturday afternoon. Burial took place in Purdy's Cemetery. Pastor Alfred Fry of Cargill was officiating.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. John Wrightson were held at Port Elgin on Monday, Dec. 31, conducted by Rev. Glen Betterly, assisted by Rev. Howard Hems. Services were held at the Davey Funeral Home and burial took place in Sanctuary Park, Port Elgin. Pallbearers were Scott Wilson, Gordon Wilson, Albert Wrightson, Grant Wrightson, Eugene Hutton and Benson Hutton.
Mrs. Wrightson was the former Ida Sara Wilson, daughter of James Wilson and Barbara Hutton. She was born in Greenock Twp. In 1915 she married there to John Wrightson. They took up farming on the 4th Con. of Bruce Twp., and there they resided until 10 years ago, when they removed to Port Elgin. Mrs. Wrightson was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, and an active worker in it's Ladies Aid, as well as the Women's Institute and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion. Mrs. Wrightson was well known in Paisley, where her parents resided for many years.
Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Lawrence, 4th Con. of Bruce; a daughter, (Anita) Mrs. Stanley Elder of Dobbington; her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James Wilson, of Pinkerton; two brothers, Edgar of Pinkerton and Wellington of Stratford.

Funeral services for the late John Wrightson, well-known retired farmer of Bruce Township, were conducted on Monday, May 12th, from the Davey Funeral Home by Rev. Glen Betterly. The deceased, who was born on the 4th Con. of Bruce and farmed there until his retirement in 1947, when he moved to Port Elgin, passed away in Saugeen Memorial Hospital on
Saturday, May 10th. He was in his 70th year, and was a member of the United Brethren Church.
Mr. Wrightson was a widower, his wife, the former Ida Sarah Wilson, predeceased him in December 1956. He is survived by one son Lawrence of Bruce Twp.; a daughter, Anita (Mrs. Stanley Elder) of Elderslie Twp.; by two brothers, George of Port Elgin and Robert of Bruce Twp.; and by three sisters, Hanna (Mrs. Samuel Vance) of Bruce; Ethel (Mrs. Lester Osborne) and Minnie (Mrs. Alvin Osborne) of Huron Twp. Interment was in Sanctuary Park. Pallbearers were Messrs. Sheldon Kidd, Alex Vance, Hector McKinnon, Albert Wrightson, James McKay and Charles Robinson.

The death occurred in Walkerton Hospital on Wednesday last of Harry Adolphus Wilson, well-known farmer of the Pinkerton area. Mr. Wilson had been in poor health for about 18 months, having suffered several paralytic strokes and from a weak heart. He had been confined to hospital since September 30.
Dolph Wilson was a native and lifelong resident of Greenock Twp. Born Sept. 15, 1905, on the Wilson homestead on Con 14, he was a son of the late Robert Wilson and Elizabeth Alexander. He attended SS#7 Greenock, Bradley School. In June 1927, he was married at Lyons, N.Y. to Bess Gruschow of the teaching staff in Cleveland, Ohio, and they made their home Con. 14, Greenock, later moving to their present home on the 12th. Mr. Wilson was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Glammis. Surviving are three daughters; Nancy in Toronto; (Lois) Mrs. L. Snook of Lyons, N.Y.; (Betty) Mrs. N. Gould of Toronto; and a son, Roy Wilson in Toronto. A son, Donald, predeceased him. There also are a brother, Norman Wilson in Greenock, and three sisters; (Laura) Mrs. George Wrightson of Port Elgin; (Verna) Mrs. Roy Foster of Con. 6, Bruce Twp., and (Anne) Mrs. John G. Wrightson of Glammis, also there are three grandchildren.
The funeral took place Saturday, with service at the Stoddart Funeral Home, Paisley, conducted by Rev. H.G. Funston of Glammis Presbyterian Church. Burial took place in Purdy's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Elmer Moffatt, Stanley Purdy, William Keyes, Irving Keyes, Lloyd Alexander, and Arthur Webb. Honorary pallbearers were Horace Moffatt and Ronald Alexander. Included among those present from a distance were friends from Toronto and Rochester, Geneva and Lyons N.Y.

The ceremony being performed by Rev. Huddleston, a former pastor of the local United Church, but now residing in Milverton. Both young people are well known here, the groom having been raised in the Eden Grove section and the bride who was born in Greenock, has for a number of years been connected with Bell Telephone Co. as an operator in the Cargill office and later in the Walkerton office, giving her best in both places where she was popular with the public on account of her pleasant, courteous manner. After the ceremony the wedding party and a number of friends partook of a sumptuous wedding dinner prepared by the Huddlestons for them. The happy couple left on short trip to Kitchener, Niagara Falls and Queenston. The many beautiful and useful gifts received show in a measure the esteem in which this young couple is held. The tragic death of a young wife and mother which saddened the entire community occurred Friday last, when Mrs. Clifford Tanner died in Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital.
Mrs. Tanner had been in serious health since last September, when she underwent and operation, and had been in the hospital since February 5. Born on the 14th con. of Greenock on May 30, 1909, she was the former Reta May Metcalfe, daughter of the late Wilson Metcalfe and Mrs. Catherine Cruickshank Metcalfe of London. She attended s.s. #7 Greenock and later Paisley Continuation School, where she was popular with the entire student body. In 1938 she was married to Clifford Tanner. They made their home in Elderslie on lot 27, con B. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Gail, and one son, Jack; also her mother in London, and two sisters, (Jennie) Mrs. George Gregg, 16th con., Greenock, and (Pearl) Mrs. Clifford Chapin, Brantford, and a brother, Willard, 14th con, Greenock.
Mrs. Tanner was a member of Knox United Church, Paisley, and an active worker in the Elora Road North Women's Institute.
Many relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute at the funeral services in Knox United Church on Monday afternoon. Dr. A.E. Cresswell conducted the service. Pallbearers were Lawrence Tanner, Donald Armstrong, Harvey Grant, Revis MacKay, Harvey Stewart and James Flett. Burial took place in Paisley Cemetery.

A pretty wedding of much interest to Paisley residents was quietly solemnized at the cottage of Rev. A.H. Wilson, Salem, on Saturday, June 11th, at 10 o'clock am, when Reta May, the daughter of Mrs. Metcalfe and the late Wilson Metcalfe became the bride of Mr. John Clifford Tanner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tanner, Elderslie Twp. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Wilson, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church. The bride was smartly attired in a green suit, with white hat and green and white accessories, and wore a corsage of yellow roses and mauve sweetpeas. Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Elwes were attendants. Following the ceremony the party returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elwes, where a bridal luncheon was served, after which the happy couple left on a motor trip to points in the United States.
The bride, who had been on the Bruce Telephone office staff here, and the groom, who for many years was the ace catcher for the Paisley Cardinals intermediate baseball team, have a host of friends in the community, all of whom join in extending sincerest whishes for a long and happy married life.

Jennie Rosella Gregg, the former Jennie Metcalf died at Victoria Hospital, London, on Tuesday, May 21, 1991. She was 80.
She was married in 1934 and lived in Greenock Twp. before moving to Paisley. She was a member of the United Church, UCW, Women's Institute and Paisley Agricultural Society.
Dear mother of Ann (Mrs. Jim Rowley), Wilson and his wife Beth, Lawrence and his wife Mary, and Allen and his friend Marguerite Wattenburg, all of Paisley. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one sister Pearl Chapin of Brantford; and one brother, Willard Metcalf of Greenock Twp. She was predeceased by her husband George Gregg and one sister Reta Tanner.
Friends were received at the W. Kent Milroy Funeral Home, Paisley, until Friday when the funeral service was conducted at the chapel. Interment in Douglas Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steven Gregg, Bevin Gregg, Barry Gregg, Todd Gregg, Martin Gregg and Andy Rowley. Flowerbearers were Paul Gregg, Steve Pitt, Ken McNeill and Ben Shoemaker.

"Geordie" and Jennie lived on lot 10, con 17 of Greenock Twp. Besides farming George was always interested in showing and raising Clydesdale horses. In 1932 he showed his first horses at the Pinkerton Fair, since then he has showed continuously and won his share of ribbons. It is believed that he was the only man in Greenock Twp. to have shown Clydesdale horses for so many years.

The marriage of Miss Pearl Cavell Metcalfe, daughter of Mrs. Metcalfe and the late Wilson Metcalfe, to Mr. Howard Alvin McMullen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. McMullen, 4th con., Huron Twp., took place on Saturday, May 4th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. MacKay of Lovat.
Promptly at the hour of 12 o'clock noon the bride, given in marriage by her uncle, Mr. J.G. MacKay, entered the living room to the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march, played by Miss Gwen Forrester of Paisley, and took her place beneath a beautifully decorated arch. Rev. A.H. Wilson of Eden Mills, the former pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Paisley, performed the ceremony in the presence of about fourty-five guests.
The bride was charming in a gown of turquoise blue sheer over taffeta with shirred bolero, and wore a corsage of Joanna Hill roses and bouvardia. After signing the register and best whishes were extended the bride led the way to the dining room where a dainty luncheon was served. Following the luncheon the bride and groom left amid showers of rice and confetti on a motor trip to London, Niagara Falls, and other points, the bride travelling in a beige coat with cranberry dress, hat, shoes and accessories. On their return they will reside on con 4, Huron Twp.
